Burrito Fundraiser for Haiti Relief
We all want to help – here’s a creative fundraiser, using burritos!
News 4 WOAI found a group here in San Antonio that is using a South Texas favorite, the burrito, to help the earthquake victims of Haiti.
Only at Saturday’s outdoor fundraiser would you find burrito-themed competitions like the no-hands burrito eating contest and the burrito baton relay. The event was held at the Medical Center on the northwest side.
While the competition events were comical, the intent was very serious: funding much-needed medical care for Haiti’s earthquake victims. It was the generous hearts of medical students at UT Health Science Center who organized this fundraiser. Many of these students returned from a trip to Haiti just days before the earthquake struck.
“While we were there, there was an enormous amount of need and coupled with the fact that there was this massive earthquake in Haiti, I can only imagine the amount of need that’s necessary now. So I think it’s really important that we get the community aware of the situation in Haiti and how they can help,” said Beth Melia, a UTHSCSA medical student and participant in Saturday’s event.
Chipotle Mexican Grill was gracious enough to donate all the burritos for Saturday’s fundraiser.
And don’t forget, you can still text “HAITI” to 90999 to make a $10 donation to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund.
