The medal swap meet, where Fiesta fans can buy, sell or trade those popular pieces of memorabilia, is to take place Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Main Plaza. Many official Fiesta nonprofit organizations will be on hand with their 2010 items. The event had been scheduled as part of Fiesta Fiesta at the Alamo, which was canceled because of rain.

Event underwriter FiestaMedals.com will choose the best professionally made medal. The San Antonio Express-News will award its prize for the best homemade medal.

So take your lunch and your Fiesta spirit to Main Plaza Tuesday—and leave with a sash full of souvenirs.

April 13, 2010 – In a global initiative encouraging consumers to reduce their environmental impact, Starbucks has announced its new green project,The Big Picture, with a free coffee offer and a symbolic film.

For the launch of The Big Picture campaign, Starbucks will provide free coffee on April 15^th in participating stores to consumers who bring their own reusable container.  Starbucks.com has also released a short film featuring thousands of New Yorkers trading in their paper cups for reusable travel mugs.  With each full coffee cup added to the sidewalk, a design begins to take shape.  The finale reveals an aerial mural of a sequoia tree, shaded by various levels of creamer.

With the catch phrase “One person switching can save trees.  Together we can save forests”, Starbucks Big Picture initiative aims to communicate with consumers about how individual actions are important to collective efforts in reducing environmental impacts.  The Big Picture website features a “Make the Pledge” section, as well as a “Calculate Impact” section powered by the Environmental Defense Fund.  So far, Starbucks has acquired over 26,000 pledges.

Although the company has been offering reusable mug discounts since 1985, Starbucks’ goal is to ensure 100 percent of its cups are reusable or recyclable by 2015.  “While our cup has become an integral part of the coffeehouse experience over the years,” says VP of Global Responsibility Ben Packard “it has also become an environmental concern.”

The governor of Minnesota, Tim Pawlenty, has found a novel use for Facebook: conducting town hall meetings. On Wednesday, March 31, at 7:15 p.m. ET, the governor will use his Facebook Fan Page to make a major announcement and to gather feedback from his fans on “helping Republicans win the 2010 elections.”

Facebook’s been a powerful tool for politicians for years:Facebook Election 2006 and Barack Obama’s “A+” use of Facebook in the campaign are just two of many examples.

This is an outdoor venue with ample free parking just outside the gates of beautiful Sandy Oaks Olive Orchard. Sunscreen, dark glasses and/or sunhats advised. Walking shoes recommended. Covered space for seminars and gift shops, but vendors, concessions and some cooking demonstrations will be out of doors. Lawn slopes slightly down hill and may be uneven in places. Tents for most activities in case of inclement weather. Tours of the olive orchard may be arranged. Not recommended for children under age 10. Not recommended for strollers or lightweight wheelchairs. Portable toilets. Limited air conditioned space.

Directions

Take IH37 south approximately 20 miles from downtown San Antonio. Exit Mathis Rd. (which is next to the Texas State highway 20 mile marker) Cross over IH37. Take the first left, which is Mathis Rd. Go 1/2 mile to venue. Sandy Oaks is south of the town of Elmendorf. Look for the 20 mile marker.
