The basics

What: 23rd annual parade celebrating the legacy of slain civil-rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968), who would have been 81 Friday.

When: Monday. March at 10 a.m.; commemorative program at noon in the park.

Where: March starts at the MLK Freedom Bridge, 3500 MLK Drive. Ends at Pittman-Sullivan Park, 1101 Iowa St. See map at right.

History: San Antonio’s MLK march has been listed as one of the country’s biggest, rivaling the one held in King’s hometown, Atlanta. Last year, an estimated 100,000 turned out for the march, held the day before Barack Obama’s inauguration. “I wish you could see what I’m seeing right now,” then-mayor Phil Hardberger told the crowd at the post-march rally. “I see people from as far as I can see here.”

Program speaker: Former high school football coach Herman Boone, 74. Name ring a bell? He was the coach whose story was told in the 2000 movie “Remember the Titans,” in which he molded a championship team amid racial tensions at T.C. Williams High School, integrated by court order in Alexandria, Va., in 1971. Denzel Washington played him.

Program music: Grammy-nominated gospel singer Marvin Sapp, whose 2007 CD “Thirsty” cracked the pop charts and earned gold certification. The follow-up, “Here I Am,” is due in March. Born in Grand Rapids, Mich., in 1968, he began singing in church at age 4.

Hip Hop Summit, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Sam Houston High School, 4635 E. Houston St. Event explores hip-hop through workshops, panel discussions and entertainment. Registration begins at 10 a.m.

Public Awards Program, 5 p.m., City Council chambers, 114 W. Commerce St. MLK Commission will present the 2010 MLK Distinguished Achievement Award. The Baha’i Unity of Humanity Award will also be presented.

SUNDAY

Wreath-laying ceremony, 2 p.m., MLK Plaza, North New Braunfels at East Houston Street. Guest speaker is Tiana Patterson, co-chair of San Antonio Cares Mentoring Movement.

Interfaith Service, 4 p.m., Second Baptist Church, 3310 E. Commerce St. Proceeds benefit the MLK Scholarship Fund.

MONDAY

Worship service, 8 a.m., MLK Academy grounds, 3501 MLK Drive. Pre-march service will include music, dance, words of encouragement, prayer and poems.

Worship program, 9:30 a.m., Pittman Sullivan Park. For folks unable to march.

Soul Food Dinner, Noon, American Legion Fred Brock Post 828, MLK Drive. Plates $7.

WEDNESDAY

Commemorative Lecture, 7 p.m., Laurie Auditorium, Trinity University. This year’s guest lecturer is ex-Black Panther Angela Davis, a human rights activist who teaches at University of California, Berkeley. Her work focuses on social problems associated with the incarceration and the criminalization of communities most affected by poverty and racial discrimination. Free.
